Defining knowledge domains for science teacher educators

Science teacher educators (STEs) have key roles in the educational system through their preparation of pre- and in-service science teachers implementing future-oriented policy reforms. Given complexity importance role, what types knowledge do STEs need? come from a range backgrounds there are few systematic routes for ongoing learning. Hence, is need tools that can help define assess STEs’ competence. The purpose this theoretical paper to highlight central domains STEs. We draw on previous work add perspectives current trends education describe four STEs: natural science, school, research. main contribution an updated conceptualisation nature qualifications, taking into account requirements including deeper learning critical thinking skills, cross-curricular work, sustainable development, research-based education. serve as tool identifying needs, recruiting staff with desired expertise, tailoring interventions support professional development various backgrounds.
